Does Mario Lemieux Still Own The Penguins? A Look At The Ownership History

Does Mario Lemieux still own the Penguins?

The Pittsburgh Penguins have had 11 ownership groups since their founding in 1967. Mario Lemieux was a majority owner of the Penguins before his group sold the team to Fenway Sports Group in December 2021.

While Mario Lemieux is no longer the owner of the Penguins, he remains a significant figure in the team’s history. Lemieux played for the Penguins for 17 seasons and was a key figure in the team’s resurgence in the 1990s. He led the Penguins to two Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and 1992 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997. In 1999, Lemieux purchased the Penguins after the team faced financial difficulties. During his ownership, he transformed the Penguins into a successful team again, winning two more Stanley Cups in 2009 and 2017.

Although he sold the team in 2021, Lemieux continues to be involved with the Penguins as a team advisor and ambassador. He is a beloved figure in Pittsburgh and is widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time.
